RN 30

An exceptional racing machine
concept from N

Hyundai N aims to make high-performance cars which allow customers to experience the pleasure of sport driving. The racing concept model RN30 debuted at the 2016 Paris Motor Show as the embodiment of these values. The RN30, with its design based on the new i30, was created for pure driving pleasure on the track.

2.0-liter turbo engine boasting 380PS and a motorsport-inspired aerodynamic design, the RN30 features progressive technologies which enable the driver to control the car with accuracy and ease. It truly embodies the Hyundai N concept of a "high-performance car that make a mischievous grin"

RN30 - Exceptional Racing Machine
Concept From N

As a racing machine designed for tracks with harsher conditions than regular roads, the RN30 is equipped with the same high-performance 2.0-liter turbo engine that is being developed by Hyundai for the N production models, but with modifications for upgraded performance. To increase engine power output, the size of the turbo has been enlarged, and the engine block is made from parts which are forged instead of cast, to increase durability and resistance to the strong explosions inside the engine. As a result, the RN30 is highly powerful with a maximum output of 380PS and a maximum torque of 46 kgfm.

With a high maximum permissible torque range,
the model is equipped with a wet-type DCT used
in high-performance cars. This works well with a
high-output engine, resulting in a quicker
response when shifting, along with direct
coupling and dynamic acceleration
capabilities befitting of a race car.
Not only that, but the RN30 also comes with
AWD for enhanced stability when taking
frequent turns and driving at high speeds.

Specialized technologies that maximize the thrill of performance

The RN30 features specialized high-performance technologies designed for excitement that allow drivers to tame the most challenging of race tracks. Rev-matching encourages spirited driving by quickly and accurately adjusting engine speed whenever the driver shifts gears while in sport mode. An Electronic Variable Exhaust system injects a surge of aural pleasure with a strong exhaust sound consistent with the visceral sensation you feel when accelerating. Other technologies aim specifically at enhancing safety and control.

N Corner Carving Differential (e-LSD) ensures each wheel receives sufficient torque by constantly measuring and regulating the force applied to the tires. This helps prevent skidding and ensures fast, precise cornering when navigating high-speed curves, allowing drivers to control this powerful racing machine easily, accurately, and confidently. Thanks to the development of these technologies in the RN30, all of these systems have become standard features in high-performance N production vehicles like the i30 N.

Engineering focus on lightweight
and low center of gravity

When developing the RN30, Hyundai’s designers and engineers established a new approach to reducing weight and lowering the center of gravity. Instead of using carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) common to most high-performance cars, Hyundai broke the mold with all-new high-performance plastic materials, developed in collaboration with leading global chemical company BASF.

These weight-saving innovations are light, highly durable and environmentally-friendly and are used throughout the new concept to help boost handling and acceleration. Inside, redundant parts were removed, while heavier parts sit in the lowest possible position. The center of gravity is lowered further by pushing back and lowering the seats, with all these elements combining to achieve a light weight, ideal for performance driving.

Exterior design formed with a high-performance DNA

The silhouette of the RN30 is unmistakeably reminiscent of the clean and cohesive lines of the new i30, but with a lower, wider stance that allows for greater stability during high speed driving and cornering. The width of the RN30 increases by 30mm when compared to the i30 to 1950mm, and the height has been significantly lowered by 84mm to 1355mm. Further exterior design details hint at the RN30's capabilities which include high-performance technologies and aerodynamic enhancements. A 'floating' fender over each wheel gives more visual impact to the RN30 and works with the side splitters to improve aerodynamic performance, keeping the car glued to the track.

The front design features Hyundai's new signature cascading grill and high-tech headlamps, to give it a strong, aggressive look that fits well with its distinctive daytime running lights. The airflow from the front to the rear passes through the mesh cascading radiator grille and air intake, which improves downforce and also provides optimum cooling for high-performance driving. On the upper part of the engine hood, a large air outlet hints at the dramatic engine power within the RN30. The large rear spoiler, which generates downforce when driving at high-speed helps to distinguish the car, giving it aesthetically balanced proportions. Also, a fin placed along the central line of the roof that penetrates the rear spoiler creates a unique look. For optimal, balanced downforce, the car features a large rear diffuser set above centrally-mounted white ceramic twin exhaust pipes, with 19-inch light-weight alloy wheels that complete the car's dynamic appearance.

Interior design optimized for racing

RN30 Interior design

During the interior design process, RN30 designers and racing experts from Hyundai Motorsport (HMSG) worked together closely to ensure drivers focus their attention exclusively on the car and the road. A bucket seat, which perfectly fits the driver’s body, and an integrated roll cage, which increases the vehicle's body strength, support and protect the driver in all situations.

To capture driver reactions and dynamic moments while on the road or track, gimbal-mounted image-stabilized cameras are attached inside each A pillar, with an outside camera attached to the center fin on the roof. With this camera system, drivers can easily capture professional-looking racing footage, and create videos of their exciting experiences on par with a TV broadcast to share with friends.
